Sometimes I begin a piece with a single word in mind. For this drawing, it was “buoyant.” I began it on Mozart’s birthday, January 27. Much of the work was done while listening to Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Piano Concerto no. 21.

The bruise-colored circle represents the note of darkness or melancholy that exists alongside the joyfulness in Mozart’s music.
